Tips for Writing an Effective Craigslist Ad Author: mike Tips for Writing an Effective Craigslist Ad How many times have you looked on Craigslist at an ad and wondered just what the person was thinking when they wrote it? There are entire blogs devoted to ads on Craigslist that run the gamut from awful to scary to just plain pathetic. Here are a few tips to make sure your ad attracts the kind of attention you want, which is the attention of buyers and not hecklers. 1.) Pick a title that tells buyers what they want to know. Mainly they want to know what the item is, and how much it’s going to cost. Try to be descriptive and have actual features and benefits in the title. A poor ad title for a vehicle would be something like ‘Cheap car, runs good’. It doesn’t tell the buyer anything they want to know. A good ad title for a vehicle would go something along the lines of ‘2008 Nissan Versa Hatchback with Auto, PW, PDL, ABS, Cruise - $15,500’ 2.) Buyers also want to know where the item for sale is. No one is going to want to travel 400 miles to buy something worth $5. Make sure you fill out your actual city in the location field when posting the ad so it shows after your title. In many areas, Craigslist might carry ads for an entire state, or even a multi-state area. Buyers don’t think it’s cute to have to open a listing just to find out where the item for sale is located, they often just skip over the listing instead. 3.) Have pictures of whatever it is you’re selling, especially if it’s going to run more than a few dollars. I mean, come on. A cheap digital camera runs what, $25 these days? Craigslist has a filter feature that lets buyers filter out ads without pictures. Unless you have images, buyers might just skip over your ad entirely. Craigslist lets you host up to 4 small images on the site. If you are familiar with basic HTML tags, you can host your pictures elsewhere and have as many as you want display in your ad at whatever size you desire. 4.) Try to present your ad in a legible manner. At least use proper capitalization and run the text through a spelling checker. How you present yourself in your ad is everything. All caps gives the online impression of shouting, and really only makes you look desperate. All lower case letters makes you look lazy. Bad grammar and spelling just makes you look dumb. Are any of these impressions you want to give to someone who might be interested in buying off you? 5.) Make sure you leave a preferred method of contact. The default contact method is email, but if you include a message in your ad to call instead, you’d better have your phone number in the listing. Also, it never hurts to put in an area code for your phone number. Some states have multiple area codes for very small geographic areas. Effectively selling any item anywhere depends on proper communication and agreement between the buyer and seller. Using these simple rules, you can make your experiences selling items on Craigslist more positive and successful.
