The best definition of a small business is one that is small in terms of number of employees, overheads and typically sales volume and annual profit. These types of businesses will include small boutiques and shops, usually run and managed by one or two persons; or a single professional like your barber, grocer or vet. Therefore because of their nature, they are usually privately owned with few investors if any.

Online business is fast replacing the traditional small business. It is internet based and allows for more flexibility and freedoms as well as a higher profit potentials.

1. There are many Advantages to owning and running an Online Business or Small Business, these include but are not limited to:

• A low cost start up
• Flexibility based on the type of business chosen, that is, part-time or full time
• Often specialized and have less competition
• A close relationship with their customers
• The value to the customer is more because their customer’s  happiness is typically the survival of  business
• Fewer constraints in terms of decision making; the number of people involved in the running of the business and changing to adapt to the market.
• As well as being suited to internet marketing
• A lack of capital to see the venture  through to profitability
• A lack of resources and correct application of those resources
• Entrepreneurs tend to work longer hours initially because their business is their success; they are concerned about their service and the customer experience as they well should be.
• Marketing: finding and using the appropriate marketing tools for their business to prosper.

2. Starting any Business is not without challenges; these may include but are not limited to:

• A lack of capital to see the venture  through to profitability
• A lack of resources and correct application of those resources
• Entrepreneurs tend to work longer hours initially because their business is their success; they are concerned about their service and the customer experience as they well should be.
• Marketing: finding and using the appropriate marketing tools for their business to prosper.

3. Marketing is the Way to Grow any Business.

Marketing is the hinge that opens the door to profits. Many businesses rely heavily on the experience of their customers to ‘spread the word’ about their service. That is not to say that many business owners do not utilize directories (online and offline); media advertising: visual and audio; and in recent years internet marketing: e-mails, online classifieds, and the like; a few will even use PPC (pay per click) advertising.

Some of these marketing methods can be too expensive for the small business owner or the new online business entrepreneur, as well as time consuming which usually is also a cost that is not affordable.

More and more entrepreneurs recognize that their businesses will survive economic turmoil if correctly positioned.

The recession has closed many small and large businesses down but, those that are able to ride out the storm will do better than they have ever done with the right skills applied to their business.

Internet marketing gives the small business owner a wider reach and once delivery systems are in place, this can be one of the most effective types of marketing
