Effective staff performance is borne out of quality people management and development techniquesAuthor: Matthew Pressman
Studies
have shown that there is a direct correlation between people management
and business performance. That may seem an obvious statement, but
there are still organisations that do not connect the two and therefore
do not maximise either their employees’ or the company’s true potential.
Whether measured in terms of productivity or profitability, effective people management improves performance and it matters not whether the business operates in the private or public sector. Indeed, the effective adoption of people management techniques returns significantly more successful results.
Staff appraisal systems are a key factor in producing good results from effective people management. The first part of the staff appraisal system is to develop a performance agreement between employee and employer. By sitting down with each employee, agreeing what is expected of them and buying them into the process is very beneficial for both parties. The employee knows exactly what they need to deliver and when, and the employer can hold the employee accountable, chart their progress and also provide help and support when results are not up to scratch.
Employee satisfaction and commitment to a business increases if they
feel they are making a difference and also that they are valued. That
may sound obvious, but there are companies that do not adopt a positive
approach to people . All

management & development. By not involving employees in the planning
of their workloads and future performance & development many such
companies may suffer high staff turnover and experience difficulty
keeping quality,
experienced staff.
But, one of the major advantages for an employee of effective people management and development is positive career progression. It enables the employer to select suitable training and development opportunities for staff, and also allows them to take corrective action if an employee is failing to perform, due to a need for re-training, for example. It also allows the employee to understand and work towards the goals of the business and each element of their job description.
In cases where performance can’t easily be measured in terms of units
produced or sold, performance agreements also allow other personal
objectives to be introduced that can be evaluated when it comes to
staff appraisal time. This way everyone in the organisation knows exactly what is expected as a satisfactory performance, and also what needs to be done to achieve a better-than-average appraisal rating. Get that right and your company will invariably go from strength to strength.
