Activities to Promote Team Building
Author: Lily Morgan
As more and more businesses discover the benefits of teams and team building, managers and corporate owners are moving to implement this in their work environment. Teams certainly do not form on their own and staying together as a tight knit group requires massive amounts of work. Building a team should be done with planned out exercises and activities. They may seem silly at first but they can go a long way in keeping everybody on track. You just might find that your team is more receptive to games and activities than you first assume.
Use something like a ball or an orange and have the team stand or sit in a circle. Begin with one person holding the ball. Have them give a brief introduction and some information about themselves before passing it to someone else in the circle. It doesn't have to be the person that is right next to them. It can be anyone in the circle. Then the person who catches it will follow suit, share their information and again pass the ball on. It is a good way to break the ice among team members who do not yet know one another.
Organize an afternoon of silly fun filled events. Carry out three legged races to show teams the value of working together as one rather than independently. You can hand out little rewards and prizes like gift certificates. It certainly doesn't hurt to have your team members contribute game or activity ideas. Though playing games hardly seems like anything work related, it gets people laughing and feeling relaxed rather than serious or uptight.
Have all of your team members take a slip of paper and write down a few random questions on it. Then have everyone put their folded paper into a cup. Pass the cup around and have each person take one, making sure that it is not the slip of paper that they had put in. Then have them read the questions and answer each one with their own personal answers. This is a fun way to do introductions because each team member does not know what question they will end up with.
Conducting a scavenger hunt can be a lot of fun. You can do a small one that is contained within the place of work or you can get really creative and have your time drive around the city for certain items. Give each team a list of scavenger hunt items and plan a simple, casual prize for the winning team. Events like this get everyone putting personal aspects aside and having fun while working toward a goal.
Play the 5 letter game by having team members write 5 words at random on a slip of paper. Then have them get into groups and make as many sentences as they possibly can. Of course, the sentences have to make sense. Team building activities don't have to be boring like many assume. It's simply about working on something together.
